Mandaluyong is easy to pass through and easy to underestimate. Wedged between Makati and Ortigas, it functions partly as a commercial hub — Shaw Boulevard and the surrounding strip remain busy with everything from SM-anchored mall dining to decades-old local joints — and partly as a dense residential city where people eat close to home and without ceremony. The Filipino comfort food here is good and affordable, and there are canteens and casual spots that have been feeding the same neighborhoods through multiple generations. Edsa strips have also added some newer entrants to the mix.
